Church Sings Praise of GlowCore Boilers
The Eden United Church of Christ, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was
having a devil of a time with its original cast-iron sectional boiler, and sent out an SOS
to local GlowCore contractor, B.G. Brecke Company. The church's congregation was
looking for somebody it could trust, and Brecke Company has an excellent reputation for
standing behind its installations.
When Bob Brecke sized up the situation, he recommended that the
1,300,000 Btu cast-iron "dinosaur" be replaced with a series of 5 GB160
stainless steel commercial boilers to heat the building's space, and 1 GB090 residential
unit interconnected with a WT40 water heater for domestic water used in the daycare
center, kitchen and restrooms.
Brecke recommended this changeover in heating technologies for
several reasons:
- GlowCore's GB Series boilers offer 89% A.F.U.E. versus approx. 60% A.F.U.E. for
cast-iron boilers.
- GlowCore's GB Series boiler can be headed together in a modular design and sequentially
fired only as needed. The cast-iron boiler is either on or off . . . all 1.3 million
Btu's or none, whether it's 50 degrees or -5 degrees F outside. This very
inefficient system leads to a tremendous amount of stand-by loss.
- GlowCore's integrated space/water technology added the domestic water load to an already
highly efficient system.
- High-efficiency savings payback of only four years can be achieved for the entire
installation.
Brecke conservatively estimated that the church would realize
fuel cost savings of at least 40 percent. But he was mistaken!
After two trips out to the church to change the gas meter -
figuring that something had to be wrong with it - Iowa/Illinois Gas & Electric Company
calculated that the GlowCore boilers consumed 50 percent less gas than the previous
year. Now that's a savings worth singing about!
